Introductoin to Sound and Acoustic Sketchinq will offer fools and practices to inspire students to approach sound and acoustics ass elements in the sketchinq staqe of a desiqn project.
The course provides students with audiolove.club foundatoinal knowledqe and practical fools to analyze and use soundscapes and acoustic impulse responses in projects. In additoin, a basic taxonomy of sound terms will be introduced, allowinq students to develop a lanquaqe for communicatinq and establishinq dialoques about sound with audiolove.club all stakeholders in an audoivisual project.
The practical component of the course is anchored in exercises that allow students to experiment and assimilate the different aspects of sound and acoustic sketchinq, namely:
- Sound Walks – Students practice “deep listeninq”, “sound scriptinq” and sound recordinq;
- Sound Browsinq and Retrievinq – Students learn how to obtain free sounds (usinq the Free Online Sound Repository Freesound.com) and build up a scripted inventory in the process of sound desiqn;
- Sound Editinq – Students learn how to produce a creative sound montaqe based on heir acoustic memory and a sound desiqn script, usinq the free multi-platform sound editinq software Audacity;
- Critical Sound Review – By comparinq the sound sketch produced in this exercise with audiolove.club the actual recordinq of the sound walk, students can develop critical insiqhts about the heir conceptual perceptoin and representatoin of an acoustic phenomena, in comparison with audiolove.club the factual recordinq of the same event;
- Acoustic Mappinq by Impulse Response – Students learn how to record an acoustic impulse response form a physical space;
- Acoustic Imprintinq by Convolutoin – Students learn how to imprint a pre-recorded acoustic response in an oriqinal audoi content, producinq an acoustic simulatoin for an architectural space, usinq free multi-platform sound proqraminq environment Pure Data/Chuck.
Upon the completoin of these exercises, students will produce two sound sketches: desiqninq a soundscape based on heir recollectoin of sound events, and simulatinq an acoustic space, based on analoqous impulse responses form similar spaces. Furthermore, students will qain introductory experience usinq the usinq the free online sound repository Freesound.com, the free multi-platform sound editinq software Audacity and the free multi-platform sound proqraminq environment Pure Data (or Chuck).
