We love the classic Motown records of the 60s and 70s that paired sliding orchestral arrangements with the sweet, syrupy voices of soul and R&B luminaries like Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield and the Chi-Lites. When the strings came in, they might circle, float, or serenade. They might pluck, tiptoe, or stagger. But they’d always play as one, forming the melancholic or hopeful backdrop for those velveteen vocals.
The musicians that supplied those strings were often borrowed from practice rooms and orchestral pits, famous only amongst other musicians, their anonymous instruments providing the soulful scaffolding for some of the greatest songs of all time.
Motown Strings is our homage to the delicate string arrangements on those classic soul records and the players. We assembled the Splice String Quartet and strung up some melodies, backing lines, swells, and other arrangements fitting of that slicked R&B and saccharine soul. Loops and one-shots of strings that sparkle, whisper, saunter, and wail. Perfect for anything rooted in soul, R&B, or simple emotion.
