Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer (1983-1984)
The TR-909 was the Roland drum machine to use samples for some sounds–crash, ride and hi-hats–and the first Roland drum machine to use MIDI. Much like it’s predecessor, the TR-808, the TR-909 was a commercial failure.
Featuring a mixture of analog and pulse-code modulation voice circuits, the TR-909 was most influential in the development of dance music genres of Techno, and Acid House. Discontinued after only a year of production, around 10,000 units were produced.
