Soloing using minor and major pentatonic scales is a skill that most guitar players develop very quickly, and then use quite frequently especially when improvising over blues or simple rock progressions. On the other hand, learning how to solo over changes using modes of the major scale can be confusing and very challenging for most players. A B Dorian progression is created by using chords derived from the A major scale, however the progression will resolve to the II minor chord, B minor. For each of the 7 modes of the major scale, Robbie has produced a correlating rhythm track and then demonstrates a solo using either a minor or a major pentatonic scale. Robbie will then break down the solo and explain why his chosen pentatonic scale works harmonically over that particular “modal” progression. In turn, you’ll learn how to apply your own pentatonic licks over any major mode progression.
C# PHRYGIAN – C# Minor Pentatonic Scale – ”In this Power Concepts lesson, you’ll be applying the C# minor pentatonic scale over a C# Phrygian chord progression. A C# Phrygian progression is created by using chords derived from the A major scale, however the progression will resolve to the III minor chord, C# minor. The C# minor pentatonic scale is also derived from the A major scale and contains all of the Sweet Notes found in the C# minor 7th chord, which is going to make applying this Phrygian Power Concept so melodic and tasty.”
D LYDIAN – D Major Pentatonic Scale – ”In this Power Concepts lesson, you’ll be applying the D major pentatonic scale over a D Lydian chord progression. The D major pentatonic scale is also derived from the A major scale and contains all of the Sweet Notes found in the D major chord…which is going to make applying this Lydian Power Concept so sweet and easy. You’ll also have the 2 and 6 as color tones to use in your lines and licks, so if any Lydian progression you play over contains the 2 and 6 in the resolution tonal center chord, those will also be Sweet Notes too.”
E MIXOLYDIAN – E Major Pentatonic Scale – ”In this Power Concepts lesson, you’ll be applying the E major pentatonic scale over an E Mixolydian chord progression. An E Mixolydian progression is created by using chords derived from the A major scale, however the progression will resolve to the V major chord, E major or E7. The E major pentatonic scale is also derived from the A major scale and contains all of the Sweet Notes found in the E major chord, which is going to make applying this Mixolydian Power Concept so sweet and easy. You’ll also have the 2 and 6 as color tones to use in your lines and licks, so any Mixolydian progression you play over containing the 2 and 6 in the resolution tonal center chord. An E6 Or E6/9 or E9 chord for example will be Sweet Notes too.”
F# AEOLIAN – F# Minor Pentatonic Scale – ”In this Power Concepts lesson, you’ll be applying the F# minor pentatonic scale over an F# Aeolian chord progression. An F# Aeolian chord progression is created by using chords derived from the A major scale, however the progression will resolve to the VI minor chord, F# Minor. The F# minor pentatonic scale is also derived from the A major scale and contains all of the Sweet Notes found in the F# Minor7 chord, which is going to make applying this Aeolian Power Concept so sweet and sassy sounding.”
G# LOCRIAN – E Major Pentatonic Scale – ”In this Power Concepts lesson, you’ll be applying the E major pentatonic scale over a G# Locrian chord progression. A G# Locrian progression is created by using chords derived from the A major scale, however the progression will resolve to the VII minor7 (b5) chord, G#mi7(b5). Why am I using the E major pentatonic scale instead of G# minor pentatonic? Well, G# minor pentatonic would be derived from the F#, E, or B major scales and therefore would contain notes that would not fit at all over our progression built from the A major scale. Analyzing one chord is fine, but in a progression, you have to consider all of the other chords too.”
Robbie demonstrates all of the soloing studies over rhythm tracks and then breaks them down note-by-note emphasizing the harmonic approaches and techniques you’ll need to get a grip on to play them correctly.
All of the licks are tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes. To help you visualize the fretboard, Robbie includes fingering charts for each of the soloing studies.
